Call Centre

There are three types of call centres: inbound, outbound and blended.

Profile of inbound agents

They receive incoming calls from customers requiring assistance. The types of queries vary according to the business in question.

Candidates with the following skills set do well in these positions:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills (clear English and proficiency in other languages an advantage)
  • Good listening skiils
  • Natural empathy
  • Good typing skills advantageous
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Product, technology and/or company knowledge advantageous
  • Good problem solving abilities

Profile of outbound agents

Outbound call centre agents make calls on behalf of a company for the purposes of telemarketing, telesales, product services, and debt collection.

Candidates with the following skills set do well in these positions:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills (clear English and proficiency in other languages an advantage)
  • Financially driven
  • Ability to handle pressure
  • Target driven
  • Perseverance
  • Ability to handle rejection
  • Good typing skills
  • Basic computer literacy

Call Centres offer a fantastic platform for young adults to learn inherent business skills to equip them for their future careers. Once familiar with the industry, an agent can proceed in the industry along a clear career path.

The majority of call-centre positions require a minimum of Matric Certificate.

Administration & Back-office

As an Admin support assistant, you will be required to answer the phone, direct and transfer calls, take accurate messages, conduct general filing, photocopying, sending faxes and emails as required and attending to queries.

Candidates for administration positions are required to have the following skills:

  • Computer literacy
  • Good typing skills
  • Good telephone manner
  • Detail orientated
  • Highly organised

Back-office support assistants are expected to conduct general filing, photocopying, data capturing and research tasks. Such positions are suited to individuals who prefer limited interaction with clients.

Candidates for administration positions are required to have the following skills:

  • Excellent computer literacy
  • Good typing skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Good organisational skills

Retail

Retail positions vary greatly. Positions include retail store and department managers, sales assistants, beauty consultants, cellular sales consultants, visual merchandisers, cashiers and replenishers.

Sales assistants, beauty consultants and cellular sales consultants

Such staff need to have an interest in the products they are selling and they should enjoy interacting, assisting, advising and selling products to numerous face-to-face customers on a daily basis. They also need to be prepared and able to work flexible hours.

Candidates for these sales positions are required to have the following skills:

  • Enjoy customer service
  • Proactive
  • Target driven
  • Well presented

Profile of a visual merchandiser

They are responsible for conceptualising, designing, and implementing window and in-store displays. They must combine their creativity and artistic flair with the technical know-how required to set up displays that maximise space within the store; while effectively catching the eye and appealing to the senses of their target customers. These positions require a degree or diploma.

Profile of a replenisher

Replenishers’ pack the shelves and rails with merchandise. This is a good starting point for individuals who have not passed matric and are looking to break into the industry.

Profile of retail store and department managers

A manager is the person ultimately responsible for the day-to-day operations (or management) of a retail store. All employees working in the store report to the store manager. You need to have excellent communication skills and problem solving skills. In addition you will need an understanding of financials, safety and security, loss prevention and staff management and development. This is a position which generally requires a number of years of experience in the industry and, preferably, a degree or diploma.
